Zenit Views - Timisoara

“Zenit Views” is a new development situated near the city core, the West University Campus, around the remnants in the proximity of the monumental Municipal Slaughterhouse (1906). A new district was devised in 1906 around this structure. A complex layer of axial and radial streets was planned, focused on the monumental entrance tower. The district was now fully completed. To this day, only the entrance court and tower of the slaughterhouse have survived.

The generator of the entire urban pattern is the old Slaughterhouse ensemble, a Laszlo Szekely project, one of the Secession representative architects at the beginning of the twentieth century in Timișoara. The ensemble was used until the beginning of the nineties and resisted until now with considerable losses. The ensemble is protected by law, and our project consists in keeping and restoring its brick architecture, rebuilding the roof of the tower and rehabilitating all buildings, with their typical wooden roof structure and cast-iron columns.

There is no tradition without innovation, and as such the old ensemble will be completed with new additions, generating together a well-defined and generous urban plaza, a main entrance into the future urban development coming from north, from the University Campus. Old and new buildings together will accommodate at ground-floors retail, exhibition galleries, public facilities, etc. The new east and west side additions will also accommodate residential units on the upper four floors.

The Municipal Slaughterhouse restored, reborn and reinvented structure will decisively contribute to the whole “Zenit Views” development and to this part of southern Timisoara.
